AYO and Community Feed the Homeless

Express India, December 21, 1999
By Sahil Sanghvi

On November 13, 1999, several members of the Ahimsa Youth Organization (AYO) participated in serving 250 South Asian meals to the homeless at the Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) in Washington DC. The success of the feeding was largely due to the support of Washington D.C. South Asian restaurants, grocery stores and the general community. Participants for the feeding included Bombay Palace (Washington DC.), Bombay Grill (Rockville, MD.), Ascot Restaurant (Washington DC.), Aangan Indian Restaurant (Bethesda, MD.), Delhi Dhaba (Bethesda, MD.), India Bistro (Gaithersburg, MD.), India Grill (Rockville, MD.), Maharaja Restaurant (Greenbelt, MD.), Metro Dhaba (Rockville, MD.), Tiffin (Langley Park, MD.), Cafe Taj (McLean, VA.) and Dana Bazaar (Rockville, MD.)

The meal was a pure vegetarian South Asian lunch and included delicious items such as samosas, various vegetable dishes, naan and sweets. This heart-warming occasion the week before Thanksgiving gave the homeless a warm meal to remember. In addition, the meal provided the homeless with an opportunity to taste something new and unique. AYO

volunteers were rewarded for their participation in this event by the smiles on the faces of the less fortunate.

Ahimsa Youth Organization is a non-profit organization that partakes in many community service and cultural projects and attempts to educate the beauty of South Asian culture to the American public. This feeding provided a prime example of how AYO incorporates both of these goals.

AYO has also hosted many events such as South Asian cultural programs and Clothes Drives to remain active in the community. AYO is presently in the midst of planning a cultural program to educate 600 Americans early next year which will include the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
